巴黎 和 his team learned that two comets, 266P /克里斯滕森 P / 2008 Y2(千兆比特) , were passing through the part of the sky the 大耳射电天文台 was surveying 在 1977, when the 哇! signal was noticed. These astronomers believe the signal came from a hydrogen cloud accompanying one or the other comet. This idea would explain why the 哇! signal was not measured again: the comet that caused it moved on 在 its orbit.

巴黎 和 team recently took an opportunity to survey the region of the sky around Sagittarius once again, using a 10-meter radio telescope, when Comet 266P /克里斯滕森 was again passing through this region. They determined that the signal of 266P /克里斯滕森 (and three other comets) matched the 哇! signal.
